This is what a gamma ray burst sounds like
This is one of the coolest things you'll hear all day. Researchers put the different wavelengths of gamma radiation received from a gamma ray burst to music. Different wavelengths for different instruments.
Gamma ray bursts are the most energetic explosions in the Universe, releasing a star's entire lifetime of energy in a fraction of a handful of seconds. These elusive blasts appear unexpectedly, shine with the light of billions of stars, and then fade away moments later. The telescopes that track them, like NASA's Swift observatory, are built for speed - slewing around in less than a minute to hone in on catastrophic events.
A mystery for decades, astronomers now believe that gamma ray bursts are the intense beams of radiation generated when high mass stars collapse into black holes. A huge star with dozens of times the mass of our own Sun detonates in an instant.
